류재춘 Jaechun Ryu
류재춘 작가 작업의 시그니처는 자연의 여러 사물 가운데 달(月, the moon)을 클로즈업한 시리즈이다. 달과 계곡과 숲과 폭포, 작가가 명명한 바위꽃 등. 작품 속 이미지는 모두 달빛을 받아 형상성을 획득한다. 작가의 수묵은 초지일관 월하(月下)의 산수이다. 작가의 달은 특별히 크고 환하다. 그 빛을 받은 산맥은 유난히 힘차고 거침없다. 산맥과 괴암괴석(怪巖怪石)들이 자기 존재를 뽐낸다. 달과 달빛과 그 빛으로 만들어지는 모든 형상들이 수묵(水墨)과 디지털 이미지의 융합적 이미지로 진화하며 현대미술의 신선한 창조적 원천으로서의 한국화가 재해석된다.
작가는 달을 둘러싼 수많은 갈래의 서사와 상징을 배경으로 현대 회화와 전통 회화의 다리를 놓으려 한다. 한국화의 미학의 본질이 무엇인지, 그 시작점이 어디인지 성찰하는 기회로 삼고 있다. 작가는 오랫동안 한국화의 미학과 전통을 현대화하는데 많은 노력을 기울여왔다. 그의 그림과 디지털 영상은 오랜 동양의 사유와 문화가 녹아있다.
작가는 밀레니엄을 전후로 우리 미술계의 현장에서 가장 강력하게 등장한 미디어아트의 다양한 형식을 현대 한국화의 새로운 형식으로 과감하게 수용하고 대중적 확산을 위해 거대한 스케일의 미디어아트를 연출해왔다. 국내에서는 코엑스와 더현대에 설치한 미디어파사드를 비롯해 미국에서 열리는 세계최대 IT, 가전 박람회의 삼성전자 부스에 작품을 연출하였고 해외 여러나라의 주요 전시에 한국의 전통회화를 소개하는데 집중해왔다. 이런 남다른 형식 실험과 노력을 통해 작가는 현대예술로서 한국화의 국제적 위상을 높이고 새롭게 해석하는 가장 적극적 실천가라는 평가를 받고 있다.
The signature of artist Ryu Jae-Choon's work lies in her series that closely focuses on nature, particularly the moon. Her works often depict the moon alongside valleys, forests, waterfalls, and elements she terms "rock flowers." In her artworks, every image derives its form and presence under the illumination of moonlight. Her ink paintings consistently explore landscapes under the moonlight (月下). Ryu's depiction of the moon is exceptionally large and luminous, and the mountain ranges basking in its light exude vitality and dynamism. The rugged rock formations in her landscapes proudly assert their existence. These representations of the moon, moonlight, and the forms created by its glow evolve into hybrid images blending ink painting and digital art, reinterpreting Korean painting as a fresh creative source for contemporary art.
The artist seeks to bridge the gap between modern and traditional painting, drawing upon the myriad narratives and symbols surrounding the moon. Her work offers an opportunity to reflect on the essence and origins of the aesthetics of Korean painting. Over the years, Ryu has devoted herself to modernizing the aesthetics and traditions of Korean painting. Her artworks and digital videos are infused with the depth of East Asian philosophy and culture.
Around the turn of the millennium, Ryu boldly embraced the diverse formats of media art, a significant force in the contemporary Korean art scene, and integrated them into innovative forms of modern Korean painting. She has staged large-scale media art installations to promote widespread public engagement. Domestically, her media facades have been featured at Coex and The Hyundai, while internationally, her works have been showcased at the Samsung booth during the world's largest IT and consumer electronics exhibition in the United States. She has also focused on introducing traditional Korean painting at major exhibitions worldwide. Through her experimental approaches and dedication, Ryu has elevated the global status of Korean painting in contemporary art and is widely recognized as a leading practitioner reinterpreting this tradition in a modern context.
