한국화가로는 국제적으로 가장 인지도가 높은 작가인 권기수작가는 현대미술에서 한국화의 새로운 관점과 형식을 선보여왔다. 작가는 2008년, 2010년 구글 초대전의 한국 대표 작가로 뉴욕에서 초대전을 열었다. 이후 풀브라이트 후원으로 미국에 체류하며 작품활동을 하였다. 권기수 작가는 밀레니엄을 전후로 다양한 미디어의 발전과 변화에 조응하여 한국화의 새로운 방법론을 실험하며 제시하였다. 

권기수 작가의 회화를 대표하는 동구리 이미지는 권기수 작가의 세계관이 확장되는 무한한 수의 텍스트의 맥락과 이해의 지평을 열어놓는 문지기처럼 이해된다. 산수와 일체가 된 인물들은 인간이 자연과 하나됨을 상징하는 하나의 조형적 장치로 작용한다. 그가 누구인지 무엇을 하는지는 중요하지 않다. 탈속의 경지를 상징한다. 동구리도 그러한 역할을 수행한다. 불특정한 운동과 형상을 지칭하는 지표일 뿐이다. 일반적인 캐릭터와는 다르다, 동구리는 순환구조를 은유하며 둥근 형태를 닮은 생의 형상, 카르마를 떠올리며 생사(生死)의 순환성을 은유한다. 

우리는 과거와 현재, 전통과 창의, 동서의 문화적 차이를 연결하고 융합하는 새로운 유형의 이미지를 권기수의 작품에서 느낄 수 있다. 권기수 작가의 동구리는 문화권에 갇혀있거나 시공의 경계에 닫혀진 의미체계가 아니라 창의와 상상을 통해 생성되어가며 확장되는 열린 체계로서 변해버린 현대 회화에서 의미 문제를 제기하고 있다. 

As one of the most internationally recognized Korean painters, artist Kwon Ki-Soo has introduced new perspectives and formats of Korean painting within the realm of contemporary art. In 2008 and 2010, she represented Korea at Google's invitational exhibitions in New York, holding solo shows. Subsequently, she resided in the United States under the sponsorship of the Fulbright Program, continuing her artistic endeavors. Around the turn of the millennium, Kwon Ki-Soo responded to the development and transformation of various media by experimenting with and presenting new methodologies in Korean painting.

The hallmark of her painting, the Dongguri image, serves as a kind of gatekeeper that opens infinite contextual and interpretative horizons within her expanding worldview. The figures merged with landscapes symbolize the unity between humans and nature, functioning as a sculptural device to convey this interconnectedness. Who these figures are or what they are doing is irrelevant; they symbolize a state of transcendence. Dongguri plays a similar role. It is not a typical character but rather a signifier of unspecified movements and forms. It metaphorically embodies the circularity of life, resembling rounded shapes that evoke karma and the cyclical nature of life and death.

Kwon’s work bridges past and present, tradition and creativity, and Eastern and Western cultural differences, producing a new type of image that merges and connects these elements. Dongguri does not belong to a specific cultural domain or adhere to confined systems of meaning bound by time and space. Instead, it evolves and expands as an open system through creativity and imagination, raising questions about meaning within the transformed landscape of contemporary painting.
