프레자일 Fragile
Fragile은 사생관(死生觀: '죽음'에 중점을 두고 '삶'을 생각함)을 주제로, 풍선 모양의 몸을 가진 Fragile creatures를 제작하고 있습니다. 단단하지만 연약한 존재인 풍선을 소재로 생명과 불안정한 균형을 표현하며 우리의 일상과 그 안에 숨어 있는 불안감을 시각화합니다. 풍선의 축제적인 형태와 대량소비적 이미지를 통해 눈에 보이는 밝은 색감 이면에 숨겨진 덧없는 생명의 가치를 은유합니다.
이번 전시에서는 ‘생명의 빛’을 주제로, 포식자와 피식자 그리고 이들이 공통으로 지닌 뼈를 모티프로 한 작품을 선보입니다. 그녀의 작품은 멀리서 보면 공산품처럼 차가워 보이지만, 가까이서 보면 독특한 질감이 드러납니다. 실제 동식물의 표면은 피부, 털, 발톱 등 같은 색과 모양이라도 미세한 개체 차이가 존재하는데 이를 표현하기 위해 세밀한 붓터치와 에어브러시의 입자를 활용하여 표현합니다.
한눈에 보기에는 귀여운 색감과 형태가 눈길을 끌며, 작품의 주제인 사생관을 직접적으로 느끼기 어렵게 설계되어 있습니다. 그러나 우리가 처한 현실 또한 겉으로 보기만 해서는 이해하기 어려운 경우가 많습니다. 얇은 막으로 이루어진 몸을 가진 이 존재들은 아주 위태로운 균형 속에서 살아가고 인간은 때로는 무의식적으로, 때로는 의식적으로 수많은 생명으로부터 터전을 빼앗아 갑니다. 반려동물, 식용, 또는 관상용 목적으로 과도하게 생산·소비되는 생명들, 병·재해, 전쟁, SNS 상의 비방과 같은 이유로 사라지는 생명 등 일상에서는 ‘실감나지 않는 죽음’이지만, 그것은 누구에게나 공평하게 다가옵니다. 그렇기에 삶을 만끽하고 싶다는 그녀는 창작을 통해 오늘날 인간이 되풀이하며 소비하고 있는 생명에 대한 문제를 작품 속 세계와 현실을 이번 전시, ‘Bouncy Holiday’에서 보여주고자 합니다.
Fragile explores the theme of views on life and death (사생관), focusing on "death" as a lens through which to reflect on "life." The artist creates Fragile creatures, balloon-like beings that embody the delicate balance of life and its inherent instability. Using the materiality of balloons—firm yet fragile—she visualizes the anxieties hidden within our daily lives. The festive appearance of balloons and their associations with mass consumption serve as a metaphor for the ephemeral value of life hidden beneath their vibrant and cheerful colors.
In the latest exhibition, themed "The Light of Life", the artist showcases works inspired by bones, a shared motif of predators and prey alike. While her pieces may seem cold and industrial from afar, closer inspection reveals their unique textures. Just as the surfaces of real animals and plants—be it skin, fur, or claws—have subtle differences despite appearing similar in color or shape, she meticulously captures these nuances using detailed brushstrokes and fine airbrush particles. At first glance, the playful colors and forms draw the viewer's attention, making it difficult to directly perceive the work's profound focus on life and death. This mirrors our reality, which is often challenging to fully understand through surface appearances alone.
The balloon-like bodies of her creatures symbolize a precarious existence, balanced on the edge of survival. Humanity, whether consciously or unconsciously, often displaces countless lives—from pets and livestock to ornamental animals—through overproduction and consumption. Other lives are lost due to disease, disasters, war, or even cyberbullying. These are instances of "unrealized deaths" that may feel distant in daily life but remain inevitable and universal.
With a desire to savor life, the artist aims to address humanity’s repetitive cycle of life consumption through her art. In her exhibition, "Bouncy Holiday", she presents a world within her works that intertwines with reality, shedding light on the fragile yet vibrant essence of life in today's world.
