올해 37세인 심우현 작가는 미국과 국내에서 총 6회의 개인전을 개최했으며, 다수의 기획전에 참여하며 활발히 활동하고 있다. 그는 2013년 종근당 예술지상 작가로 선정되었으며, 박사 논문을 통해 회화성(painterly painting)을 심도 있게 탐구하며 자신의 작업적 뿌리를 확인하고 새로운 방법론을 모색해왔다. 심우현의 작업은 어린 시절 자주 뛰놀았던 숲속에서의 기억에서 출발한다. 그가 느꼈던 숲의 원초적이고 생생한 에너지, 그리고 그 속에서 경험한 미묘한 공포와 신비는 캔버스 위에서 격렬한 붓질과 생동감 넘치는 원색의 표현으로 발현된다. 혼재된 이미지의 혼돈 속에서 그는 시간과 공간의 경계를 넘어가려는 열망, 감춰진 

세계를 드러내려는 비밀스러운 충동을 담아낸다. 역동적인 드로잉이 만들어내는 몽환적인 세계는 감각으로 가득 찬 본질적 에너지를 관객에게 전달한다. 

그의 작품은 자연(nature) 속에서 체험한 깊은 감정을 역동적으로 구현하며, 강렬한 생명력을 느끼게 한다. <숲, 회화적 관능의 무대> 깊고 짙푸른 절망과 불안을 마주할 때, 예술은 유희의 장이자 치유의 안식처가 된다. 캔버스 위를 가득 채운 유화 물감의 층, 수없이 쌓인 붓질의 흔적, 우연히 드러나는 형상들과 그 속에서 피어나는 서사와 알레고리…, 이러한 요소들은 복합적으로 얽히며 그림을 화가의 욕망과 불안이 교차하는 극적인 장으로 만든다. 몰입과 몰아의 순간, 화가는 스스로의 온전한 세계를 발견하고 회화의 본질을 향한 끊임없는 질문을 던진다. 그 질문은 회화의 형식을 변화시키는 동력이 되었으며, 색채와 촉감, 그리고 제스처가 두드러지는 ‘회화적 회화(painterly painting)’의 전통을 이어가게 했다. 불안한 현실과 희망이 공존하는 지금, 예술의 감동과 숭고한 에너지는 고난의 파도를 넘어 심원에서 길어 올린 창조적 힘이다. 이러한 이유로 우리는 여전히 <회화적 회화>의 깊이를 갈망한다. 

심우현의 ‘숲’은 그의 서사와 철학적 사고의 근원이며, 삶과 죽음의 본질적 동질성을 탐구하는 공간이다. 캔버스는 수많은 붓질과 물감의 흔적을 담아내는 물리적 무대일 뿐만 아니라, 의식의 바깥에서 떠오른 이미지들이 무의식적으로 투영되는 정신적 공간이기도 하다. 그의 작품에서 ‘숲’은 심연의 상징이자, 원초적인 감각이 춤추는 리듬의 현장이다. 혼재된 이미지 속에서 시간과 공간의 경계를 넘으려는 열망, 억눌린 공포와 죽음의 본질을 드러내려는 충동, 그리고 신화적 관능의 세계를 구현하는 역동적인 붓질이 그의 작품 전반에 녹아 있으며 회화적 탐구와 독창적 예술 세계를 찾으려는 여정의 기록이다. 그 숲은 생명의 원천적 에너지를 일깨우며, 그 에너지의 회복을 갈망하는 우리를 강렬히 끌어당긴다. 지금, 그의 숲은 단순한 풍경을 넘어선 삶의 본질을 사유하게 만드는 장소로 우리 앞에 서 있다.

The 37-year-old artist Sim Woo-Hyun has held six solo exhibitions in both the United States and Korea and actively participates in numerous curated group exhibitions. In 2013, she was selected as an artist for the Jongkundang Art Project, and through her doctoral thesis, she deeply explored the concept of painterly painting, examining the roots of her work and seeking new methodologies.

Sim Woo-Hyun's work begins with memories from her childhood, particularly from the forest, where she often played. The primal and vivid energy she felt in the forest, along with the subtle fear and mystery she experienced, manifests on the canvas through intense brushstrokes and vibrant primary colors. Within the chaos of mixed images, she conveys a desire to transcend the boundaries of time and space and a secret impulse to reveal hidden worlds. The dreamlike world created by her dynamic drawings conveys an essential energy full of sensory experience to the viewer.

Her work dynamically embodies the deep emotions she experienced in nature, evoking a strong sense of life force. In her piece Forest: A Stage of Painterly Sensuality, when confronted with profound despair and anxiety, art becomes both a playful arena and a sanctuary of healing. The layers of oil paint filling the canvas, the countless traces of brushstrokes, the forms that emerge by chance, and the narratives and allegories that bloom within them — all of these elements intertwine to create a dramatic stage where the artist's desires and anxieties intersect. In moments of immersion and intensity, the artist discovers her own complete world and continually questions the essence of painting. These questions have become the driving force that transforms the form of painting and has continued the tradition of painterly painting, with an emphasis on color, texture, and gesture. In a world where anxiety and hope coexist, the emotion of art and its sublime energy are creative forces drawn from the depths, overcoming the waves of suffering. For this reason, we still yearn for the depth of painterly painting.

Sim Woo-Hyun's forest serves as the origin of both her narrative and philosophical thinking, a space where the essential similarities of life and death are explored. The canvas is not only a physical stage that captures countless brushstrokes and traces of paint, but also a mental space where images arising from beyond consciousness are unconsciously projected. In her work, the forest symbolizes the abyss and is the stage where primal senses dance in rhythm. The desire to transcend the boundaries of time and space, the impulse to reveal the suppressed fear and the essence of death, and the dynamic brushstrokes that realize a mythical sensual world are infused throughout her entire body of work. This marks a record of her ongoing journey in search of both a painterly exploration and an original artistic universe. The forest awakens the primordial energy of life, drawing us powerfully towards the restoration of that energy. Now, her forest stands before us as a place that compels us to contemplate the essence of life, beyond being a mere landscape.
